Resources in economic geography: from substantive concepts towards a relational perspective

چکیده

Resources are crucial for the technological and economic development of firms in spatial perspective. In this paper we contrast two ways of conceptualizing resources, and argue that a conventional, substantive understanding implies a number of shortcomings which can be overcome through the application of a relational conception of resources. In examining four types of resourcesömaterial resources, knowledge, power, and social capitalöour argument is that resources are constituted in a relational way in two aspects. First, resources are relational in that their generation, interpretation, and use are contingent. This depends on the particular institutional structures and social relations, as well as on the knowledge contexts and mental models of the agents involved. Second, some types of resources, such as power and social capital, are also relational because they cannot be possessed or controlled by individual agents. They are built and mobilized through day-to-day social practices. Individuals or groups of agents may appropriate the returns, but not the resources themselves. We conclude that a relational concept reflects the contextual and interactive nature of the selection, use, and formation of resources. This offers new insights into the explanation of heterogeneity in firm strategies and trajectories, as well as regional differences in the development of localized industry configurations, such as clusters. Towards a Relational Economic Geography: Old Wine in New Bottles?

Recent theoretical and empirical advances in economic geography have contributed to the emergence of what might be termed a “relational turn” that focuses primarily on the ways in which socio-spatial relations of actors are intertwined with processes of economic changes at various geographical scales – global, local, or glocal. This mapping of actororiented “relational geometries” fundamentally...

The Death of Distance Revisited: Cyberplace, Physical and Relational Proximities

This paper studies the impact of physical distance and different relational proximity types on the formation of the Internet infrastructure. Although there is some anecdotal evidence on the ‘end of geography’ effect of the Internet, the relationship between physical space and the Internet has not been yet scrutinized. In addition, owing to the network nature of the Internet, the structure of th...

Creative Industries from an Evolutionary Perspective: A Critical Literature Review

Although creative industries have been popular as a research topic among social scientists from various backgrounds, most studies lack an explicit evolutionary, history-informed perspective. In this paper, we critically explore whether the notions of evolutionary economic geography can contribute to analyzing and explaining the spatial dynamics of creative industries, which has not been done ye...

Mapping Via Time-Geography to Elucidate Institutional, Economic, and Political Change

Change has always been an issue for studies in politics and economics. However, there are few systematic treatments of institutions. This paper exemplifies how institutions (i.e., rules, norms and conventions) relate to the time-geography concepts of constraints, which affect different agents, policy-making, as well as economic performance. This paper seeks to advance the current discussion and...
